More than four decades after their brief but explosive run in the early 1980s California punk scene, the music of Intensified Chaos is finally receiving an official release.

Formed in 1982 at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California, Intensified Chaos began when three teenage punks met in a math class: vocalist Rob “Noxious,” bassist Adam Gates (later known as MC Bob C. Cock of Primus), and former Fang drummer Chris “Critter” Ritter. Inspired by the rising wave of hardcore punk bands including GBH, Discharge and Black Flag, the trio quickly recruited guitarists Torrence Tang (Turner) and Bill Collins, forming the lineup that would record the band’s earliest material.

The band recorded a six-song demo at Xandor Studio in Orinda. Through connections in Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue punk scene the demo found its way to influential punk DJ Tim Yohanan, who began playing Intensified Chaos on his KPFA radio show Maximum Rock & Roll. Yohanan passed the demo to Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, who was assembling a landmark compilation documenting the emerging West Coast hardcore movement.

Intensified Chaos was selected to open the Alternative Tentacles compilation Not So Quiet on the Western Front, a 1982 double album featuring 40 California and Nevada punk bands. The band also appeared on the first page of the debut issue of Maximum Rocknroll Magazine, which was packaged inside the album.

During their short but energetic run from approximately 1982 to 1984, Intensified Chaos performed at iconic Bay Area venues including the Mabuhay Gardens, Ruthie’s Inn, The Berkeley Square, The On Broadway, The Tool & Die, and The Sound of Music. They shared stages with influential punk bands such as the Dead Kennedys, Angelic Upstarts, Bad Religion, Verbal Abuse, Crucifix, Code of Honor, Vicious Circle, Toxic Reasons, Killing Joke, and many others.

Although plans for an EP based on the original demo were discussed at the time, the record was never completed, leaving fans to wonder if more music from Intensified Chaos existed.

43 years later, the lost recordings finally surface.
